How to Read a Natal Chart
A natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. Astrologers read it as a map: planets (energies), signs (flavors), houses (life areas), and aspects (relationships between energies). This guide explains every part so you can interpret your own chart at /almanac/mystics/natal-chart.
The Big Three
If someone asks "what's your sign?" they mean your Sun sign. But that's only one third of the picture. The Big Three are the loudest voices in your chart:
A Leo Sun with a Cancer Moon and Scorpio Rising looks intense and private to strangers, feels things deeply at home, but radiates warmth and drama once trusted. None of the three is the "real you" — they all are.
The 12 Signs (Energies)
Signs are the FLAVOR a planet expresses through. Mars in Aries acts boldly; Mars in Pisces acts indirectly.

The 10 Planets (Energies)

The 5 Major Aspects (Relationships)
Aspects are the GEOMETRIC ANGLES between two planets. Each angle has a different conversation.
Planets fused. Energies blend completely — can be intense or amplified, depending on planets.
Planets in tension across the chart. Pulls in opposite directions — invites integration through awareness.
Flowing harmony. Easy talent, but can be lazy because it never demands effort.
Friction. The growth aspect. Forces action through challenge — uncomfortable but generative.
Opportunity. Cooperative energy that needs a nudge to activate. Easy when invoked.
A Practical Reading Order
- Start with the Big Three. Sun (identity), Moon (emotional self), Rising (presentation).
- Find Mercury, Venus, Mars. Mind, love, drive. These are how you operate day-to-day.
- Look at Jupiter + Saturn. Expansion vs. limitation — your growth edges and your hard work.
- Note the outer planets. Uranus, Neptune, Pluto move slowly — they describe your generation more than you, but their HOUSE matters.
- Read major aspects. Look for oppositions and squares first (tension that wants resolving), then trines (gifts), then sextiles (opportunities to develop).
- Find chart shapes. Stelliums (3+ planets in one sign), empty houses, ruler of the rising sign — these are the chart's personality.
- Don't over-interpret. A natal chart is a map, not a prison. Use it as a mirror, not a verdict.
